How To Create A Faux Bob

Fake short hair for a night out! The step-by-step.
Rock a chic shoulder-grazing bob and get to keep your long tresses? Sign us up anytime! It's called the faux bob -- aka faking short hair with an updo that turns your long hair into a shoulder-grazing bob hairstyle. And it's a huge hit in Hollywood, with Rachel Bilson and Kate Beckinsale among the many celebs who go faux.

The beauty of the faux bob is that you get to try out a fresh new hairstyle without the major commitment of snipping your length. Plus, it takes just 5 minutes to achieve the look. Faking it is super easy. Here's how:

How to create a faux bob:

  1. Add texture. The faux bob looks most natural when it's texturized for an undone feel. Add texture to hair by working in a volumizing mousse then randomly curl large sections of hair with a curling iron.
  2. Make a loose ponytail. Leaving a few face-framing pieces out, pull the rest back into a loose ponytail at the nape of your neck. Secure with a snag-free elastic, then slide the elastic down a couple of inches away from your scalp.
  3. Roll it up. Tuck the tail and the elastic under the rest of your hair at the nape of your neck, then secure with bobby pins.
  4. Shape out. Spread hair evenly to create the shape of a rounded bob, then mist with hairspray for extra hold.
