When the usually silent Elin gave her side of the story to the magazine a few days after her divorce was finalized, People was so confident that it will sell at the newsstands that they raised their price and printed more copies.
They may be right on that score, but the sales number wasn't enough to beat Brad Pitt and Angelina's issue, in which they debuted their twin daughter and son, Vivienne and Knoxx, in 2008.
An editor at a competing magazine told Pop Eater, "Everyone at People will be popping the champagne this morning. Early numbers show that Elin sold around 2 million copies, way up from its average of 1.4 million, yet not quite the 2.5 million Angelina sold."
Still, Elin's cover is considered more profitable for People because she didn't ask for money. The magazine paid Brangelina $12 million for the exclusive photos and story, which they subsequently donated to charity.
But Elin opened up her story for free, making her issue one of the most profitable issues of all time.
A friend of the Swedish model told the website, "This wasn't about the money for Elin. It was about telling her story once and for all. She will be happy that so many people bought the issue and finally read the truth."
"But now she hopes they all go away and leave her and her family alone. The last thing in the world Elin wanted to be was a celebrity."
