I just saw a video on vietnamese mail order brides, and I am confused...
Vietnamese mail order brides
Why would anyone want to "order" a spouse...that to one who doesn't speak English. What's worse is, these men who end up buying a wife (it costs $10,000 btw), actually send their wives for virginity testing, which if they fail, the husband's get reimbursed and are given the option of returning their wife.
What the! I thought slavery ended a very long time ago.
I feel so disturbed, especially after reading some of the comments at the bottom of the video...

Well, the Vietnamese generally can speak mandarin, albeit limited, so I guess communication might be not be a big problem. They can learn as long as they have the basic.
The girls from Vietnam are normally beautiful, have good figure (when I visited Ho Chi Minh 2 years ago for holiday, I didn't remember seeing any overweight woman), demure, and submissive. Some Singapore girls I seen have bad attitude, expect to be treated like princess all the time, and demanding. If I'm a man, the 1st option sounds better, so don't blame the men. I guess the virginity requirement was to ensure that the girl came from a good background, not some sort who sleep around, party, & problematic.
Bottom line is, I won't judge Vietnamese woman who came to Sg as mail order bride. At least they come in peace n etiquette & don't snatch or seduce our bf/husband like other nationality do...

Hmm I'm not sure if you can call it "slavery" cos many of them want to marry out into better lives or to get citizenship in another country.

It is slavery! Without demand there'll be no supply and these poor viet gals can earn a living doing sth else, like work in a factory and save up for their education so that they can earn more after graduation.. Somehow this Viet bride thing is like prostituting themselves to men.. Wad if they meet horrible men/pimps and really become sex slaves! Oh no....

I found out about this quite a while back.. this this is really akin to slavery. the girls do not get the 10000. the agents do. they just get a really really small amount of money. and sometimes, they do not even want to come to sg at all! I can understand why guys would want a viet girl but to treat like a business??

those agents who 'sell' the brides have no conscience.
