How sex addiction affects relationships
Apart from the serious risks of contracting sexually transmitted diseases through unprotected casual sex, being addicted to sex can also have a devastating effect on relationships:An addict's sexual obsession means the bulk of their time and energy is spent on chasing their next sexual "high". "Sexual obsession can take the form of seeking sex from multiple partners or an obsession with masturbation and pornography," Kane highlights. They are emotionally unavailable for their partner and this ultimately erodes their relationship. Work and daily routine can also be adversely affected.
Getting treatment for sex addiction
Admitting to having a problem can be difficult for many sex addicts, especially if they are ashamed of their behavior. But making this first step is critical, because nothing is likely to change without treatment that gets to the root of the problem. Cognitive behavioral therapy is usually the main form of treatment as it is a means of tackling why the sex addiction may have developed, as well as helping to tackle the problem. It may also be useful to join a support group so that you can interact with people who are in the same boat. There are groups for both addicts and their partners or family members.
