| | 1 / 11 1. Tobacco smoke
Maternal smoking can lead to pregnancy complications such as premature birth, low birth weight, pre-eclampsia, miscarriage or stillbirth. It also greatly increases your baby's risk of having asthma, learning difficulties, heart defects, and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Even second-hand smoke should be avoided. "Cigarettes contain thousands of toxic chemicals, all of which are harmful to a developing baby as they can cross the placenta," explains Alison Edwards, Senior Lecturer in Midwifery at Birmingham City University.
