Meditation: Therapy for the Mind & Body

Beginner's guide to meditation.
There are many techniques of meditation, but it typically involves turning the attention inward to the mind through intense concentration on a specific subject. Learn how meditation calms the mind and body, and how you can reap the benefits with the basics of meditation.

Meditation Benefits

Meditation is often practised to combat stress, provide inner peace, self-awareness and better health, and to restore balance physically, emotionally and mentally. Meditation is said to unclutter the mind, enabling one to dissolve stress and improve alertness as well as to reduce irritability and moodiness. You can experience the positive effects of meditation even if you're no expert - simple meditation techniques such as the one described below have been shown to be calming for both body and mind:

Meditation for Beginners

Sit upright in a place without noise and distractions, where you can be completely relaxed. If you're a beginner and find the classic lotus position uncomfortable, sitting in a chair is fine. Relax your muscles and silently focus the attention on your breathing, an image or a sound. If you find it difficult to focus, meditation CDs can be found in many bookstores; there are even guided meditations with verbal instructions for beginners.

As your mind progresses into a state of tranquility and balance, your breathing becomes slow, deep and even. Absorbing yourself in the repetition of your breathing will allow you to still the mind and allow inner awareness to emerge.
