NPC usually does not show any symptoms in the early stages. However, in the later stages, the following symptoms may be experienced:
- Lump in the neck. The lump is a swollen lymph node invaded by cancer cells.
- Bleeding, blocked nostrils, mucus secretion.
- Loss of hearing, pain, buszzing noise, discharge.
- Voice hoarseness, difficulty in swallowing.
- Paralysis of one side of the face.
Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment for Nasopharyngeal Cancer
Unfortunately, studies have shown that screening for NPC with current tests to detect cancer early is not cost effective and is not recommended. However, the following tests are important for diagnosis: endoscopic examination, CT scanning, blood test and bone scans.
Treatment options include radiotherapy, chemotherapy and surgery. However, the role of surgery is limited in NPC treatment because it is very difficult to remove the cancer without injuring vital neighbouring organs and tissues.
