5. Keep dust mites and allergens at bay

Dust mites can trigger asthma in some allergic individuals. To keep dust mites and other allergens at bay, clean cushions, curtains and upholstered furniture regularly. Uncarpeted floors are best, but if you prefer your floors covered, it is advisable to replace carpet with removable natural-fiber rugs that can be taken up and washed often.

It also helps to wipe your furniture with a damp cloth regularly, and vacuum at least twice a week.
