2. Wearing impossibly high heels

High heels in the form of stilettos first became popular in the Thirties, and since then there's no stopping our obsession with them. It's not just the celebrities who go ga-ga for "killer heels" -- more women are wearing higher heels, and for longer, and experts are becoming more concerned about the long-term damage they are doing to their feet.

Why it's not worth it: Uber-high heels place increased pressure on the front of the feet which can result in hammer toes to bunions. And long-term wear can cause calf muscles and Achilles tendon to shorten permanently, so that it hurts when you switch to wearing flat shoes. Recent research suggests that up to a third of women suffer from permanent problems as a result of prolonged wearing of killer heels. You can avoid this by wearing heels no higher than 1.5 inches. For heels that are 3 inches or higher, reserve them for just once or twice a week.
