Labour Support & Birth Partners

Guide to choosing the right support companion during your childbirth.

Recent studies show that effective labour support can shorten labours and prevent complications. Here's what you need to know about birth partners, their roles in the delivery room and how they can make a positive difference during childbirth.

The role of the birth partner

A supportive birth partner is one of the most effective forms of care you can receive during childbirth. The advantages are many: When you're giving birth, having a familiar face who will remain by your side during labour provides invaluable support and reassurance. In addition to emotional support, he or she can provide practical help by communicating with hospital staff on your behalf.

The companionship of a good birth partner can also help you feel more in control and lessen the need for intervention. In fact, one study found that the presence of a birthing partner who was able to offer encouragement in pain control made an epidural less likely.

It is also found that having a good birth partner reduces the risks of depression in the following weeks and that you're more likely to feel confident about motherhood in general.
