Breastmilk Storage

Question:

What's the best way to store expressed breast milk?

This is a question that's been asked by many breastfeeding moms.

Freshly expressed breastmilk can be safely stored at room temperature (25 degrees Celsius or 77 degrees Fahrenheit) for up to four hours max.

If you are not going to use the milk within four hours after pumping, store it in sterilized bottles and refrigerate or freeze it as soon as possible. Storing the expressed milk in feed size amounts in bottles can help prevent wastage, but do make it a point to label all the bottles with the dates and time of collection.

Milk that is refrigerated at 4 degrees Celsius or 39 degrees Fahrenheit can be stored for up to 48 hours. Frozen breastmilk can be stored for three to six months. It's best to store the milk in deep freezers or chest freezers because they typically have lower and more consistent temperatures. Avoid storing on the door of the freezer or refrigerator since every door opening can cause temperature to fluctuate.
