How you can lower your baby's risk of SIDS

While there's no sure way to predict which babies will die from SIDS, there are many ways to lower the risk. These include:
  1. Get good prenatal care. Including proper nutrition, no smoking or drug and alcohol use, and regular medical checkups beginning preferably within the first three months of pregnancy.

  2. Always place your baby to sleep on her back, even though infants may sleep more soundly on their stomachs. Babies who sleep on their stomachs and sides have a higher rate of SIDS than those who sleep on their backs.

  3. Use a firm mattress and remove all fluffy and loose bedding. There should be nothing in the bed but the baby - no covering, no pillows, no bumper pads and no toys. Soft mattresses and heavy covering are associated with the risk for SIDS.
