Q&A

Healthier Holiday Food

Question:

Are there any holiday foods that are actually good for my diet?

At this time of year, it seems like there's temptation everywhere you look. But there really are holiday favorites that are good for you.

Here are some healthy options you can indulge in without sacrificing your waistline:

  • Sweet potatoes and pumpkin pack a nutritional punch with vitamins A and C, and lots of fiber
  • Eat the filling of your pie and leave the crust to avoid downing extra calories
  • Cranberries and pomegranates -- often found in sauces, cocktails and seasonal salads -- deliver antioxidants, vitamins and fiber without many calories
  • Turkey is one of the leanest meats out there -- just go for the white meat and skip the skin
  • Scan the hors d'oeuvres for low-fat offerings like veggies, hummus and shrimp cocktails.
  • Stick to a few cubes of cheese or a handful of nuts. These protein-rich snacks will satisfy your hunger so you'll consume less fat and fewer calories over the course of the evening.
