6 Low-Fat Cooking Tips

Easy ways to cut the fat (but not the flavor) from your family's meals.

3. Low-fat dressing

  • When making salads, substitute reduced- or non-fat mayonnaise or French and Thousand Island dressings for full-fat ones. Alternatively, try healthier dressings such as garlic and herb dressing and non-fat yogurt which add flavor to your dishes without the fat.

  • 4. Healthier oils

  • Switch to healthier oils for cooking. Monounsaturated oils such as olive oil and canola oil protect the arteries by reducing the 'bad' LDL (low-density lipoproteins) cholesterol without lowering the 'good' HDL (high-density lipoproteins) at the same time. At the same time, limit your consumption of saturated animal fats and trans fat, both of which are linked to an increased risk for coronary heart disease and high blood cholesterol.
