Excessive Sweating and Treatment Options

Treatments for Excessive Sweating
For secondary hyperhidrosis, the condition can be successfully treated by targeting the underlying cause and eliminating the root of the problem.

For people who sweat uncontrollably with no known cause, the treatment options are somewhat more limited.

  • Antiperspirants and Body Powders. This can provide relief for mild to moderate cases of hyperhidrosis, but has to be repeated regularly. The most effecitve agent seems to be aluminium chloride (20-25%) in alcohol solution.

  • Oral Medications. Drugs with an anti-cholinergic effect may be prescribed, though often with limited success. These block the neuro transmission responsible for sweat production. Side effects include blurry vision, dry mouth, etc.

  • Botulinum Toxin. Botox can be used to effectively treat excessive sweating, especially for the armpits area. Once injected, botox enters the specific glands responsible for excessive sweating, and blocks the release of a chemical that signals the perspiration. The effects can last an average of 7.5 months.

  • Surgery. For patients who are unresponsive to medical therapy, surgery can be considered as a last resort. In most cases, a procedure called sympathectomy is performed to remove part of the nerve supply to the sweat glands. In other cases, the sweat glands themselves (together with the skin) are surgically excised (removed).
    Surgical Options
Sympathectomy can be effective, especially for sweaty palms. Sweating of the armpits alone might respond better to botulinum toxin injection or skin excision.
