Plus: Nutritious, easy-to-assemble breakfast ideas.
Can breakfast make your child smarter? New research from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursting shows it just may. The researchers studied more than 1,000 six-year-old children in China and concluded that children who ate breakfast regularly had significantly higher verbal and performance IQ test scores, and 4.6 points higher in total IQ scores than children who did not.

With that in mind, here are some nutritious, easy-to-assemble breakfast ideas you and your family will love:

Oatmeal with peanut butter and granola

Serve oatmeal with milk topped with 1 tablespoon of crunchy peanut butter and a sprinkle of granola.
Why you'll love it: Oatmeal and granola are loaded with fiber and help keep your child feeling satisfied until lunchtime. Milk adds to your child's calcium needs while peanut butter is rich antioxidant vitamin E, magnesium, potassium and healthy fat.

Yogurt topped with berries and nuts

Chop up some strawberries. Sprinkle the berries and nuts over a plain live-culture yogurt.
Why you'll love it: Live-culture yogurt contains probiotics -- good-for-you bacteria that can help boost digestive and immune system. It's also got quality protein and bone-building calcium. Berries are rich in immune-boosting antioxidants while nuts offer healthy fats.

Omelet with vegetables

Beat the eggs, stir in a variety of veggies such as diced tomato, mushroom, onions, bell peppers and chopped spinach, then cook mixture in a skillet.
Why you'll love it: It's an easy, delicious way to sneak more vegetables into your child's diet. Eggs are also nutritional powerhouses packed with a variety of vitamins and minerals.

Tuna sandwich with OJ

Top bread with tuna spread and a slice of cheddar. Serve with a glass of 100% orange juice.
Why we love it: Tuna is a rich source of muscle-building protein, healthful omega-3 fatty acids and selenium, an antioxidant while cheese provides calcium. The OJ offers a dose of vitamin C.

Chocolate banana smoothie

Blend chocolate drink powder, milk and banana and drizzle a little chocolate syrup on top before serving.
Why you'll love it: If your child loves chocolate, he'll love this. Smoothies are super nutritious -- the milk provides a healthy source of animal protein and calcium while bananas pack potassium, vitamins C and B6. Adding banana will make the smoothie naturally sweet and do away with the need for any sweetener.

Fortified cereal mix

Just add milk to a serving of fortified breakfast cereals.
Why you'll love it: The up-side of breakfast cereals is they are low in fat, high in energy-giving carbohydrates and supply the goodness of milk. Fortified cereals will also add several vitamins and minerals to your child's diet, including iron, which is essential for healthy brain development.
