Miscarriage Myths Every Mom-to-Be Should Know

10 common misinformation surrounding pregnancy losses.

Myth 7:

If you have fibroids, you are likely to miscarry.

Fact: Most fibroids do not cause miscarriages. One possible exception is the growth of large or multiple submucous fibroids (in or around the uterine cavity). If the fertilized egg happens to be implanted near a submucosal fibroid, this can mean a decreased blood supply to the developing embryo due to the thinned-out lining of the uterus. The fibroid may also cause some inflammation in the surrounding lining, and possibly lead to a miscarriage.

Large fibroids tumors are, however, usually present for many years and in most cases, women are aware of them prior to conception. If a woman has a history of fibroids she should consult her gynecologist about their removal prior to a pregnancy.

Myth 8:

Airplane trips may cause a miscarriage.

Fact: This claim has not been scientifically proven. The reason why doctors sometimes warn women against flying if they have a history of miscarriage is so they can readily seek medical attention in case they miscarry again.
