Handling cat litter brings a risk of contracting toxoplasmosis, which can be fatal to unborn babies. "Women are generally advised to avoid changing cat litter trays and gardening although using gloves and practising good hand hygiene are also very effective," says Edwards. If you own a cat, get someone else to help change the litter just to be on the safe side.
