Dieting Gone Overboard
Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa have become a common affliction among young women. Studies show that approximately 90-95% of sufferers are female. Anorexic and bulimic sufferers inherently have low self-esteem and often possess a tremendous need to control their surroundings and emotions.
These young women often share some common traits: they are high achievers who are brought up in strict families, and appear happy and helpful outwardly. But in fact they often feel helpless, stressed and inadequate.
For them, eating disorders develop as a way to deal with a variety of external and internal conflicts, such as stress, anxiety, unhappiness and the feeling that life is out of control.
