Spa Scare: Hot Tub Folliculitis

The next time you're heading to the spa pool or hot tub, be picky about the hygiene standards of the spa centre of your choice. Hot tub folliculitis may develop after a session in an improperly disinfected spa pool.

What is Hot Tub Folliculitis?
Hot tub folliculitis is an infection of the hair follicles following a hot tub session. Hot tub water that is not adequately treated with chemicals can become the breeding ground for the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa. When a person soaks in the water, the bacteria can enter the hair follicle on the skin, causing inflammation or infection called folliculitis.
