Spa Scare: Hot Tub Folliculitis

Symptoms of Hot Tub Folliculitis
The signs usually occur between 6 hours to 3 days after using a poorly chlorinated hot tub.

- Itchy bumpy rash on the trunk, limbs and buttocks
- Fever
- Small fluid filled blisters (pustules)

Areas of the body that are in contact with wet clothing tend to have more lesions. Untreated pustules may aggravate to become furuncles or boils, which are dark red and tender nodules.

What Causes Hot Tub Folliculitis?
The infection is caused by exposure to contaminated water in a hot tub or spa. Such infection is more common in spa facilities because the high temperatures of the water provide an ideal breeding ground for the bacteria. People with open cuts or sores or with a history of other skin conditions, and diabetic individuals are at a higher risk for infection.
